In this comprehensive guide, we explore the benefits, techniques, and progressions of Nordic curls, providing you with the tools to integrate this dynamic exercise into your workout regimen.
Discover the synergy between Nordic curls and the Nordic Hyper GHD machine, and unlock a new dimension of strength, flexibility, and athletic performance. One of the most effective hamstring exercises, get ready to discover why Nordic curls are a game-changer in the realm of functional fitness
How to Perform a Nordic Curl with Precision
Although you can create a labor-intensive setup to perform a Nordic curl, the Nordic Hyper GHD allows you to anchor yourself with ease and adjust the angle of the pad so you can adjust the level of difficulty. Nordic curls can be difficult at first, so having a machine that can support your progression and give you the security to move with precision is a must.
Here’s how you do a Nordic curl with the Nordic Hyper GHD:
Set up: Secure your lower legs, by anchoring your feet into the pads, just above your ankles.
Positioning: Keep your hips extended and your torso upright and engage your core to maintain a straight line from your knees to your head.
Lowering phase: Slowly lean forward at the hips, squeezing your glutes and hamstrings, as you lower your upper body toward the pad. Control the descent by using your glutes and hamstrings to resist gravity.
Full extension: Lower your body until your hips and lower stomach touch the pad or until you can no longer control the movement.
Rising phase: Do not rest on the pad. Just slightly touch the pad and explode back up to the starting position. Maintain control and a straight line, squeezing your glutes and hamstrings for the whole movement.
To get the most out of this exercise, follow these tips for performance:
Start with a controlled descent and gradually increase the difficulty as you get stronger.
Perform the exercise in a controlled manner to avoid straining your hamstrings.
Squeeze your glutes and hamstrings and engage your core throughout the movement to maintain proper body alignment.
The Nordic curl is an advanced hamstring exercise, and it's important to listen to your body. If you're a beginner, consider starting with assistance and gradually progressing to the Nordic curl as your strength increases.
Progressions for the Nordic Curl Using a Nordic Curl Bench
Progressing with Nordic curls on a GHD machine allows you to increase the difficulty with control so you can work yourself up to a full Nordic curl and beyond. To get started or progress, use these variations to gradually build strength while following the tips and cues from the previous section for performing the Nordic curl:
Assisted Nordic Curl:
Begin with the pad of the GHD set at hip level.
Kneel on the machine facing down, securing your feet under the footpad.
Lower your upper body slowly towards the ground, using your hands to push back up.
Gradually decrease the assistance from your hands over time.
Partial Range of Motion:
Set the GHD at hip level.
Perform Nordic curls but limit the range of motion. Focus on control during both the descent and ascent phases.
As your strength improves, gradually increase the range of motion.
Full Range of Motion (Eccentric Emphasis):
Lower the pad of the GHD to a level slightly above the ground.
Start in a kneeling position and slowly lower your upper body towards the floor with a controlled eccentric motion.
Use your hands to assist in pushing yourself back up.
Gradually reduce the assistance from your hands.
Unassisted Full Range of Motion:
Once you can control the eccentric phase, aim to perform the full Nordic curl without assistance.
Focus on maintaining proper form and control throughout the movement.
Weighted Nordic Curl:
Secure your feet and set the GHD at a suitable height.
Hold a weight plate against your chest or use other forms of resistance.
Perform the Nordic curl with added resistance, gradually increasing the weight as you become stronger.
Single-Leg Nordic Curl:
Elevate one leg off the ground and perform the Nordic curl using only the working leg.
This variation adds instability, challenging the hamstrings and enhancing balance.
Elevated Nordic Curl:
Place the GHD at a higher setting, increasing the angle of your body relative to the ground.
This increases the intensity and places more emphasis on the hamstrings.
Remember to progress gradually, focusing on proper form and control. It's essential to listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too quickly, especially if you're new to Nordic curls or using the GHD machine.
The Benefits of Doing Nordic Curls
The Nordic curl is considered an excellent exercise because it targets the hamstrings in a unique and challenging way. Here are some reasons why the Nordic curl is beneficial and the types of individuals it can help:
Isolation of hamstrings and glutes: The Nordic curl specifically targets the hamstrings and glutes, helping to isolate and strengthen these muscles effectively.
Eccentric emphasis: The exercise places a strong emphasis on the eccentric (lengthening) phase of the hamstring muscles. This eccentric loading is important for muscle strength and injury prevention.
Functional strength: The Nordic curl mimics the type of muscle activation and control needed during activities like running, jumping, and deceleration. This makes it a functional exercise that can contribute to overall athletic performance.
Injury prevention: Strengthening the hamstrings can contribute to injury prevention, particularly in activities that involve explosive movements or changes in direction.
Balance with quadriceps: Many individuals may have an imbalance between the strength of their quadriceps and hamstrings. Strengthening the hamstrings with exercises like the Nordic curl can help restore this balance, reducing the risk of injury.
Improved posture: Strong hamstrings are essential for maintaining good posture and supporting the health of the lower back.
Versatility: The Nordic curl can be adapted to different fitness levels by adjusting the assistance or resistance. Beginners can start with assistance, and advanced individuals can add resistance for greater intensity.
Athletes and fitness enthusiasts: Athletes involved in sports that require strong hamstrings, such as soccer, football, and track and field, can benefit from including Nordic curls in their training regimen.
Rehabilitation: The Nordic curl can be a valuable rehabilitation exercise for individuals recovering from hamstring injuries. It allows for controlled strengthening without excessive stress on the injured muscles.
Overall lower body strength: While the Nordic curl primarily targets the hamstrings, it also engages the glutes, core, and lower back, contributing to overall lower body strength and stability.
If you’re ready to unlock your full fitness potential start performing Nordic curls with the Nordic Hyper GHD. This machine allows you to do Nordic curls with precision, tailor-made to your fitness level. Not only does the machine progress as you get stronger, but you can also perform a variety of exercises on this single, easy-to-store machine.

I’ve had my bench for a couple of weeks now and am ready to share my initial impression: I love it! I’d been using a perfectly adequate adjustable bench for the past 20 years, but decided to upgrade to the ABX because I wanted a leg trainer, and this one was supposed to be the best on the market. The fold-down top, the wheels, and the vertical storage features were initially not important to me. The first thing I noticed when it arrived was wow, it was heavy. As I put it together, I began to appreciate the quality of the design and construction. This is a top-of-the line bench in every way. It’s a work of art. In terms of functionality, it’s perfect as both a flat and inclined bench. The leg trainer exceeded my expectations as well. I'm constantly working around knee issues but don’t experience any pain using it. I couldn’t be happier with the setup. I then tried the fold-down top while doing seated DB shoulder presses and I realized what an improvement this was. And I began to appreciate how easy the wheels made it to move the bench around my workout room for different exercises. And then I tried storing it vertically and realized that was easier than what I was doing before, and it was a huge improvement to the layout of my workout space. In short, I couldn’t be happier with my purchase.
I use my Hyper Pro X almost every day now, and it has made my workouts noticeably more effective. It is one of those pieces of equipment that quickly becomes a regular part of your training routine.
At first, changing between the different setups takes a little practice, but once you get used to it, it can be converted very quickly. At the moment, I use it most often for hip thrusts and Nordic curls, and it works great for both.
What I particularly like is how solid the whole machine feels. Nothing rattles or wobbles, even during harder exercises. The different positions also feel very natural and ergonomic, which makes training much more comfortable.
Overall, I am extremely happy with the Hyper Pro X. It is versatile, very well built, and has definitely improved my home workouts. Easy 5 stars from me. 👍
I had two full sets of mixed kettlebells, one for work and one for home. I sold the work set and made enough to buy 2 of these. So convenient, super solid and easy to adjust and well balanced too. I’d looked at adjustable before but until this one they were too inconvenient to switch in the middle of a workout or they were poorly balanced and weird shaped. These are great!
As a personal trainer who operates out of her garage space saving is KEY. I train a lot of moms (pregnancy, postpartum) and the bench helps me train them throughout this seasons safely and effective. It’s so sturdy and safe for me to use. The bench gives me so much variety on training my clients.
Hyper Pro X is the most versatile machine I’ve ever used! It’s far and away the best purchase I’ve made for my garage gym. I especially love the leg attachment that lets me hit quads and hamstrings thoroughly. They also have excellent customer service and helped me out with a mistake on my end without hesitation. It was awesome! If you’re on the fence, just go for it. You won’t regret it!
Perfect for working out at home, the long range of weight allows to make progress fast. Super easy to use, I also appreciate the soft surfaces and the quality of all materials. It arrived to Madrid on the date indicates and perfectly packaged. A solid 10/10!
I really love these kettle bells! They take up minimal space and I can work out wherever I want with them. They work exactly like their advertised as well. I have had no issues with them.
My family and I are so excited to integrate this into our training routines. My daughter's already started to talk about the leg pump from the leg developer. The system was really easy to follow for construction. Love the videos that walk you through it, and for our small gym it's such a great space-saving way to add so many different training components to our sessions.
I have a home gym in my garage and space was an issue. This was the perfect machine to enable me to do so many different movements without taking too much space. If youre looking for a good quality well built machine that is compact, this is it.
Only downside would be that it takes some time to get used to it. Youre gonna need to watch videos on how to use it before youre familiarized with it. But besides that, it works very well.
I’ve got to be honest, I was a PowerBlock dumbbell / kettlebell guy but, I had long outgrown present ones and my wife had taken them over. Trying to get the larger set of PB ones over here in Scotland was impossible, which led to me looking at others and I ended up at Freak Athlete. So, I did my research and, after a bit, went again my Scottish heritage and spent money!! The kettlebells were in short supply and I received one, then the other several months later (no biggie). They are, without a shadow of a doubt, the dogs bo**ocks of adjustable kettlebells! Amazing. The build, the ease of adjustment, the lack of the ‘clang’ sound during use, the design, the cool FA logo! I need to stay in shape for my work and I travel a lot - these guys, and my endless rope, are my companions from this point forward! Are there any down sides? Honestly, no. You can tell a lot of thought have went into these and, I’m sure, they will outlive me, given I’m 60 next year. Finally, a big shout out to the customer services team who continually kept me informed throughout the delay of the second KB. You guys genuinely did your company proud. All in all, a positive experience - not something a Scotsman usually says after parting with money! 😂
It’s missing all the nuts. It is scratched with deep dents and literally the hardware packaging shows that the washers are sealed where the nut should be. I can’t even put it together. Not to mention every bolt on that was tightened from the factory is scratched.
Also, the first step of the video is to install the long bolt. That is listed as step 2 on the hardware packet.
What an upgrade to my home gym. This adds so many more options for workouts while using minimal space. Also the quality of this is top notch, a nice heavy solid bench for all kinds of lifts. 100% you will love this for a home gym!
I won’t lie, I was skeptical that I could find an all in one piece of equipment that met both excellent quality build, ease of use, and produced true results. Especially one claiming to be so versatile and allow so many important movements to be built into my fitness routine. However, I have fallen in love with the Freak Athlete Pro. As someone who has limited gym space at home it’s beyond a perfect fit. Furthermore, as a single role medic at a fire department, keeping my posterior chain, core, and legs strong and healthy is a requirement. The Freak Athlete Pro provides for me what would take a commercial gym membership with a host of equipment to fulfill. All at a fraction of the cost, a minimal footprint, and a premium design. Well done Freak Athlete!!
We bought the ABX, the Leg development attachment, the sit-up attachment, the dip bar, and the cable pulley attachment for our 16 year old grandson to use! Today was the 1st morning that he used it and he loves it!!! I ordered the power tower yesterday! We expect he will get great use from this system.
I am so pumped I pulled the trigger on the ABX weight bench. It was super easy to put together. It is a HEAVY DUTY bench, comfortable, extremely high quality. What I love most is how you can add accessories to this bench to make it a complete system. More to come on that soon, hope to add to it within the next few months. First one will be the ABX leg developer attachment.
I did extensive research on benches knowing I wanted to invest in a high quality, well made bench that would last for a lifetime. I would put this bench up against any of the “major brands” in the space as this equipment is just as good if not better, and priced below those other options. Not to mention as I said above, the versatility of this bench with the ability to accessorize.
Very happy with this purchase. Nice work Freak Athlete. This is my 2nd piece of equipment from FA, and definitely not my last!
A Swiss Army Knife That Actually Fits a 6'5 Frame!
Most modular benches compromise stability for versatility—and usually run way too short for tall lifters. The Freak Athlete ABX is the rare exception, functioning as a rock-solid main press bench for a 6'5 frame while transforming into a legitimate leg training station.
Bench Versatility & Build:
Rock-Solid Foundation: The wide X-frame stays grounded during heavy presses and decline setups with zero tipping or frame flex.
True Tall-Lifter Fit: The extended pad length and zero-gap setup mean total spine support—no head hanging off the edge or lower back falling into awkward pad gaps.
Seamless Transitions: Switching from upper-body pressing to lower-body work takes under 60 seconds.
Leg Extension & Curl Performance:
Full Range of Motion for Long Legs: The leg developer offers enough adjustment leverage for long shins, allowing full knee extension without hitting the floor or maxing out pad positions.
Zero Slop: The threaded locking knob completely eliminates side-to-side wobble under heavy loads.
High-Density Padding: Firm roller pads keep internal metal tubing from digging into your shins or ankles on heavy sets.
The Bottom Line:
If you're 6'5, need to maximize garage gym space, and refuse to compromise on heavy leg days or solid press work, the ABX with the Leg Developer is hard to beat.
One of our simple
youth "Freak Athlete" routine to bulletproof my youth soccer players againts injuries while boosting their speed and explosiveness.
This Hyper Pro is an incredible multi-function bench is such a great fantastic, space saving additon to our new garage gym!
-The Nipales Butler, NJ-
Exactly as advertised and as we had hoped!
This thing is rock solid, but still not super heavy like a lot of benches I’ve tried. The pads feel premium and the handles, knobs, and adjustments are all really well made and I know will honestly last a lifetime. Sure it’s expensive but it’s very much worth it.
